Friendship Heights Chevy Chase Restaurant Openings: What's Next

A sign went up on the door at 5471 Wisconsin Avenue in late August, the kind of taped paper notice that regulars notice before anyone else does. Junction Bistro, Bar & Bakery had closed that Friday, and the notice printed by The Collection promised something new was on the way. "We're reimagining this space to bring you a fresh new dining and hospitality experience," it read. Two doors down, The Hunter's Hound had already said its own goodbyes.

Anyone who walks that stretch of Wisconsin Avenue between Clyde's of Chevy Chase and Sushiko knows the corridor rarely sits still for long. What's worth noticing this fall isn't that two storefronts went dark in the same month. It's how differently the empty spaces around Friendship Heights are behaving, depending on whose name is on the lease.

The Same Complex, Emptied Twice in a Month

Junction Bistro, an Alexandria-based eatery known for its brunch and bakery counter, closed its Chevy Chase location on August 28. The company told its followers the Alexandria location was doing fine and didn't say much about why the Maryland outpost was ending. The Hunter's Hound, the Irish pub next door, wound down around the same stretch of late summer. Both sat inside The Collection at Chevy Chase, the upscale dining and retail development at 5471 Wisconsin Avenue that also houses Clyde's, Sushiko, and Potomac Pizza.

Two closed storefronts in the same complex in the same month is the kind of thing that makes a regular wonder if the block is losing momentum. It wasn't. It was the opposite.

How Fast a Two-Restaurant Swap Actually Moved

Within about two weeks of Junction's last brunch service, CCLC, the company formerly known as the Chevy Chase Land Company and the owner of The Collection, announced who was moving in. Metropolitan Hospitality Group, the operator behind more than a dozen restaurants across D.C. and Northern Virginia including CIRCA, Él Bebe, Trio Grill, SALT, and Heirloom, signed on for both vacated spaces at once. The group is bringing Open Road, its American gathering-place concept, to Chevy Chase with a nautical spin, alongside an entirely new all-day café and wine bar called Cove.

This is MHG's first Maryland location in the two decades since it opened its first restaurant, CIRCA at Dupont, in 2007. MHG president Matthew Carlin said the group had been looking for the right entry point into Maryland and that Friendship Heights stood out for its connectivity and its residents' appetite for quality dining. Both concepts are targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, meaning the current stretch of the calendar.

The replacement announcement came about two weeks after Junction served its last plate, a fast turnaround for commercial real estate. The block's backbone, Clyde's, Sushiko, Potomac Pizza, wasn't going anywhere. The turnover was surgical, not structural.

The Bakery That Announced Itself Nine Months Ago

A few storefronts away, inside The Shops at Wisconsin Place at 5400 Wisconsin Avenue, a different kind of vacancy has been playing out on a much slower clock.

Kneads Bakeshop & Cafe, a family-owned Baltimore bakery tracing its roots to the Paterakis family's H&S Bakery, announced back in December 2025 that it would open its fourth location, and first outside Baltimore, in the former Peet's Coffee space at Wisconsin Place. The timeline, according to the company's own press release:

  • December 16, 2025: Kneads announces the Chevy Chase location, with plans for all-day breakfast, lunch, and a full bakery counter, plus a push into DC-area wholesale supply.
  • Targeted opening: the second quarter of 2026, the April-through-June window.
  • September 2, 2026: Bethesda Magazine's restaurant column still describes Kneads as "poised to open in Chevy Chase soon," reporting on Junction's closure in the same piece.
  • September 10, 2026: the same outlet repeats the line almost verbatim while covering the Open Road and Cove announcement next door.

That means the storefront has now run at least three months past its own stated target, with no updated opening date attached to any of the coverage tracking it. The landlord side of this deal isn't CCLC. Wisconsin Place is owned by Nuveen and was leased through the commercial brokerage KLNB, a separate ownership and leasing structure from the one that turned Junction and Hunter's Hound around in two weeks.

What Two Different Clocks Tell You About the Block

The lesson for anyone walking this stretch isn't that Friendship Heights has a vacancy problem. It's that a dark storefront on Wisconsin Avenue can mean two very different things depending on which building it sits in.

At The Collection, CCLC runs its own development end to end, and the replacement announcement came within about two weeks of Junction's last service. At Wisconsin Place, a bakery chain with real momentum in Baltimore, family history dating back to 1943, and a stated plan to supply restaurants across the DMV, has not opened by its stated spring target. Neither pace tells you anything about how much the neighborhood wants good food. The properties have different ownership and leasing structures.

If you've been holding out for Kneads' coffee counter before your Metro ride, there's still no new date to put on a calendar. If you've been wondering what replaces Junction's brunch crowd, Open Road and Cove are the answer, and the fourth quarter of this year is the window CCLC and MHG have both put in writing.
